What is REAP?
REAP is our grant-based, business-skills training, savings and mentoring model that provides a sustainable strategy for extreme poverty alleviation in the pastoral communities across Africa’s drylands. It officially stands for “Rural Entrepreneurship Access Project” and while it serves as our standard model from which all others are based, it is also the name of our standard programs throughout Kenya. How many countries does BOMA work in?
BOMA currently implements or provides technical assistance across seven countries: Kenya, Uganda, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Chad, Cameroon, and Burkina Faso. BOMA partners with local or regional nonprofits and government agencies in countries where we do not have a physical presence to see through the implementation of our work. READ MORE
When was BOMA founded?
In 2006 BOMA was officially registered as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in the United States after an extensive period of research, travel, and coalition building. 99% of our staff are now based in Africa, led by Kenya-native Dr. Sam Owilly. READ MORE
What is our approach to extreme poverty eradication?
BOMA exists for those not yet reached by traditional development interventions and programs. We tackle extreme poverty head on through a multidimensional understanding of the problem, and with adaptive solutions that are built for long-term impact, long after formal program interventions end. Does BOMA use the graduation approach?
After four years of implementing our original REAP model in Northern Kenya, BOMA refined its model design in 2011 to integrate key components of the poverty graduation approach, originally pioneered by the Bangladesh-based NGO BRAC. In 2018 BOMA partnered with BRAC’s Ultra-Poor Graduation Initiative to launch the PROFIT Financial Graduation program in Samburu country. READ MORE
