Kathleen Colson, Founder
Kathleen Colson, co-founder of BOMA, has deep ties to Kenya that began during her studies with St. Lawrence University’s Kenya Semester Program and continue to this day. As the founder of African Safari Planners, she organized trips and supported conservation and humanitarian efforts in Kenya for over 25 years. Following a visit to drought-stricken Northern Kenya in 2005, Kathleen was inspired to address the recurring humanitarian crises facing pastoral communities and BOMA was born. Under Kathleen’s leadership, BOMA has scaled its impact across Kenya, formed strategic partnerships, and expanded into other African countries.
GUIDING PRINCIPLES
BOMA was founded on three guiding principles
Women's Economic Empowerment
Ending poverty must start with improving the economic potential of women and building the resilience of their families.
Local Leadership
Any long-term solution must be embraced and led by locals to succeed.
Data Driven
The work would be driven by data, and rigorous measures of success.

LOOKING AHEAD

Dr. Sam Owilly, CEO
It is clear that our sector faces unprecedented challenges driven by widespread humanitarian crises, natural disasters, the escalating situation in the Middle East, and continued mass displacements in or around the areas where we work across the African continent.
These circumstances deeply impact our collective focus and ability to eradicate extreme poverty, which remains BOMA’s core mission. In a weak economic climate, youth unemployment continues to rise, amplifying the urgency for BOMA’s adapted solutions. Our commitment to addressing the multidimensional nature of extreme poverty remains resolute: a focus on directly tackling household poverty, creating decent work opportunities for young women and men, and supporting displaced communities to reconstruct their livelihoods and integrate with their host communities.
At BOMA, we are dedicated to leveraging our extensive experience, partnerships, and adaptive models to make meaningful contributions to those facing such adversity. We continue prioritizing collaboration with industry peers around the world, fostering a spirit of learning and providing our expertise from a uniquely African perspective. We remain steadfast in our commitment to keep BOMA’s vision and mission stronger than ever. Our board and team remain resolute on our journey to reach those yet to benefit from our solutions. In our pursuit of delivering greater results across more diverse populations, we have embedded continuous learning into our operations to share challenges, ideas, and innovations to help us deliver greater and longer-lasting impact for our participants.
